Les notes du violon osseux de la Mort ont endormi les fêtards d'un bal masqué dans un sommeil permanent, mais les autres musiciens se précipitent vers la sortie. L'image est une allégorie d'une épidémie de choléra qui frappa Paris en 1831. L'épidémie tua 20 000 des 650 000 habitants de la ville. Après plusieurs années en tant que peintre à succès de commandes publiques majeures, les épisodes intermittents de maladie mentale d'Alfred Rethel l'ont amené à se consacrer à l'activité moins stressante de la gravure.
