Fragilité humaine [L'Umana Fragilità] (1656)

La fragilité humaine a été peinte à une époque de grande peste. L’artiste lui-même avait perdu de nombreux proches à cause de la maladie, notamment son fils, son frère et sa sœur. Le tableau représente la maîtresse de l'artiste, Lucrezia, et leur fils. L'Ange de la Mort serre le poignet du jeune garçon et l'oblige à écrire : " Conceptio Culpa, Nasci Pena, Labor Vita, Necesse Mori ", ce qui signifie " La conception est un péché, la naissance est une douleur, la vie est un labeur, la mort une nécessité. " L’arrière-plan de l’image contient de nombreux objets inquiétants et memento mori.
