Le cauchemar (1781)

Le Cauchemar est une peinture à l'huile de 1781 de l'artiste suisse Henry Fuseli. Il montre une femme endormie profondément, les bras jetés sous elle et un incube démoniaque et simiesque accroupi sur sa poitrine.

L'évocation érotique onirique et obsédante de l'engouement et de l'obsession du tableau a connu un énorme succès populaire.

Pour les téléspectateurs contemporains, The Nightmare évoquait la relation de l'incube et du cheval (jument) aux cauchemars. L'œuvre a probablement été inspirée par les rêves éveillés de Füssli et de ses contemporains, qui ont découvert que ces expériences étaient liées à des croyances folkloriques telles que les contes germaniques sur les démons et les sorcières qui possédaient les gens qui dormaient seuls. Dans ces histoires, les hommes recevaient la visite de chevaux ou de sorcières, ce qui donnait naissance aux termes « montage de sorcière » et « montage de jument », et on croyait que les femmes avaient des relations sexuelles avec le diable. L’étymologie du mot « cauchemar » ne concerne cependant pas les chevaux. Le mot est plutôt dérivé de mara, un terme mythologique scandinave désignant un esprit envoyé pour tourmenter ou étouffer les dormeurs. Au début, le sens du mot « cauchemar » incluait l'expérience du dormeur du poids sur la poitrine combiné à une paralysie du sommeil, une dyspnée ou un sentiment de terreur. La peinture incorpore une variété d'images associées à ces idées, représentant une tête de jument et un démon accroupi au sommet de la femme.

Füssli a peut-être ajouté le cheval après coup, car un croquis préliminaire à la craie ne l'incluait pas. Sa présence dans le tableau a été considérée comme un jeu de mots visuel sur le mot « cauchemar » et une référence consciente au folklore : le cheval déstabilise la vanité du tableau et contribue à son ton gothique.

La Dame de Shalott (1888)

La Dame de Shalott est un poème d'Alfred Tennyson, écrit 50 ans avant que Waterhouse ne peint ce tableau. La Dame de Shalott est maudite et obligée de rester dans une tour. Elle n'a le droit de regarder le monde qu'à travers un reflet dans le miroir. Un jour, elle voit un chevalier, Sir Lancelot, et tombe amoureuse de lui. Elle ignore la malédiction et quitte la tour pour le retrouver, ce qui entraîne sa mort. L'histoire de Lady of Shalott peut être lue comme un avertissement concernant le désir féminin. The painting “Medusa” is a captivating work that delves into the rich tapestry of Greek mythology. Medusa, one of the three Gorgon sisters, was often depicted as a monstrous figure with snakes for hair, whose gaze could turn onlookers to stone.

La Licorne est en captivité et n'est plus morte est le dernier panneau d'une série de tapisseries montrant le symbolisme païen et chrétien. Les thèmes païens mettent l'accent sur la tradition médiévale des amants séduits, tandis que les écrits chrétiens interprètent la licorne et sa mort comme la Passion du Christ. En 1498, Dürer publie un livre illustrant l'Apocalypse de Jean, le dernier livre du Nouveau Testament. Les images étaient uniques par leur grande échelle, l’étendue de leur concept et l’unité de leur conception. La sorcière (pièce de nuit) (1626)
