In this surprisingly colorful study of mortality, this undated gouache by Herman Henstenburgh depicts a skull ironically garlanded with flowers. The table is adorned with sheet music, a butterfly, a sputtering candle, and an hourglass -- all symbols of the ephemerality of life.
