La destruction du Léviathan est basée sur l'histoire biblique du Léviathan référencée dans le livre de Job. Le Léviathan est décrit comme un serpent géant cracheur de feu si terrifiant que sa simple vue rendrait les hommes fous. Le livre d’Isaïe dit plus tard que le jour du jugement dernier, Dieu tuera le serpent.

Le visage du serpent s'inspire probablement des représentations du grand serpent de Midgard dans les contes nordiques, et la scène de bataille elle-même était basée sur le Rig Veda, où Indra tue Vritra (le premier-né des dragons) avec un coup de foudre.

La destruction du Léviathan représente l'abolition des ténèbres et de la folie. Dans cette œuvre, Gustave utilise sa représentation de la créature pour montrer les ressemblances avec des créatures terribles décrites dans d'autres religions afin de mettre en valeur sa philosophie d'unification personnelle.
