L'apparente douceur de cette œuvre de John Collier, peintre préraphaélite, est un merveilleux témoignage des deux faces de la figure de Lilith. Jonglant entre les images de sensualité, de beauté et celle d'une meurtrière froide, Collier est l'une des artistes qui ont transformé son image. De la déesse assyrio-babylonienne, connue plus tard comme la première femme de la mythologie juive, Lilith se transforme peu à peu en une icône puissante.

Les couleurs contrastées du tableau, et sa palette chaleureuse, rehaussent encore davantage l’atmosphère qui se dégage de l’œuvre. Cette utilisation des couleurs, chez Lilith comme dans les autres portraits de Collier, lui vaut une certaine reconnaissance de la part de ses contemporains. Considérée comme solennelle, son œuvre offre pourtant une maîtrise évidente des tons et de la lumière.

Finalement, la figure de Lilith évolue progressivement de la dangereuse démone dépeinte par les écrits religieux à un symbole de sensualité, mais aussi de féminisme.
