On dit que La Mort d'un étrangleur d'Alfred Rethel a tellement hanté ses contemporains et perturbé leurs rêves qu'il a créé cette œuvre pour dépeindre une image plus réconfortante de la Mort. Le vieux sonneur de cloches avait sonné de nombreux décès, mais maintenant la Mort travaille les cordes de la cloche pour marquer le nouveau jour. La mort a parcouru un long chemin pour accomplir son travail, car il porte la coquille de coque de pèlerin. Le vieil homme semble être parti en paix, entouré des symboles de sa foi et à la ceinture son trousseau de clés ; un symbole d'ordre.
