Bien que les érudits aient tenté pendant des siècles de comprendre la signification allégorique de cette estampe, l’artiste et auteur du XVIe siècle Giorgio Vasari l’a décrite simplement comme « une anatomie de nus desséchés et d’os de morts ». Une figure centrale de la Mort ailée se dresse au-dessus d'un squelette enterré, entouré d'une variété de figures humaines squelettiques et vivantes qui semblent débattre du sort de l'âme. À l’extrême gauche se trouve un homme « marasmique », une sorte de corps séché au soleil utilisé par les anatomistes pour étudier les muscles sans enlever la peau. Rosso Fiorentino, qui a conçu la composition de cette estampe devant être gravée par Agostino Veneziano, était un contemporain florentin de Michel-Ange qui projetait un livre sur l'anatomie qui ne fut jamais publié.
