La modelo mira dentro de la pelota, dejando al espectador imaginar lo que podría estar viendo y pensando en ese momento. Su apariencia sugiere que es pura y gentil, aunque la calavera que se encuentra al fondo de la escena ofrece un toque de simbolismo más siniestro. A un propietario anterior no le gustó esta adición y de hecho pintó sobre ella, aunque afortunadamente una restauración reciente ha devuelto la pintura a su composición original.

Son los toques arquitectónicos en el fondo de la sala los que dan a la pintura una impresión del Renacimiento, con un estilo que difiere del enfoque gótico que se encontraba en muchas pinturas de esta época. La construcción algo más amigable de líneas verticales y horizontales de los estados papales italianos de siglos antes parece más adecuada al estilo artístico de Waterhouse.
