La destrucción de Leviatán se basa en la historia bíblica de Leviatán a la que se hace referencia en el libro de Job. Leviatán es descrito como una serpiente gigante que escupe fuego, tan aterradora que solo verla enloquecería a los hombres. El Libro de Isaías dice más tarde que en el día del Juicio, Dios matará a la serpiente.

El rostro de la serpiente probablemente se inspiró en las representaciones de la gran serpiente de Midgard en los cuentos nórdicos, y la escena de la batalla en sí se basó en el Rig Veda, donde Indra mata a Vritra (el primogénito de los dragones) con un rayo.

La Destrucción del Leviatán representa la abolición de la oscuridad y la locura. En esta obra, Gustave utiliza su representación de la criatura para mostrar las semejanzas con criaturas terribles descritas en otras religiones para mostrar su filosofía de unificación personal.
