Las notas del huesudo violín de la Muerte han adormecido a los asistentes a un baile de máscaras hasta dejarlos en un sueño permanente, pero los demás músicos luchan por salir. La imagen es una alegoría de una epidemia de cólera que azotó París en 1831. El brote mató a 20.000 de los 650.000 habitantes de la ciudad. Después de varios años como pintor de gran éxito en importantes encargos públicos, los intermitentes ataques de enfermedad mental de Alfred Rethel lo llevaron a dedicarse a la actividad menos presionada del grabado.
