Retrato de Maud Wagner (1907)

Maud Stevens Wagner (de soltera Stevens; 12 de febrero de 1877 - 30 de enero de 1961) fue una artista de circo estadounidense. Fue la primera mujer tatuadora o artista conocida en los Estados Unidos. Wagner era trapecista y contorsionista y trabajaba en numerosos circos ambulantes. Conoció a Gus Wagner, un artista del tatuaje que se describió a sí mismo como "el hombre más marcado artísticamente en Estados Unidos" mientras viajaba con circos y espectáculos secundarios, en la Exposición de Compra de Luisiana (Feria Mundial) en 1904, donde trabajaba como trapecista. Ella intercambió una cita romántica con él por una lección de tatuaje y varios años después se casaron.

Después de dejar el circo, Maud y Gus Wagner viajaron por los Estados Unidos, trabajando como artistas de tatuajes y "atracciones de tatuajes" en casas de vodevil, ferias del condado y salas de juegos. Se les atribuye haber llevado el arte del tatuaje al interior del país, lejos de las ciudades y pueblos costeros donde comenzó la práctica.
