La dama de Shalott es un poema de Alfred Tennyson, escrito 50 años antes de que Waterhouse pintara este cuadro. La Dama de Shalott está maldita y obligada a permanecer en una torre. Sólo se le permite mirar el mundo a través del reflejo en el espejo. Un día ve a un caballero, Sir Lancelot, y se enamora de él. Ella ignora la maldición y abandona la torre para encontrarlo, lo que resulta en su muerte. La historia de Lady of Shalott puede leerse como una advertencia sobre el deseo femenino.
