La fragilidad humana fue pintada durante una época de gran pestilencia. El propio artista había perdido a muchos familiares cercanos a causa de la enfermedad, incluidos su hijo, su hermano y su hermana. La pintura representa a la amante del artista, Lucrezia, y su hijo. El Ángel de la Muerte aprieta la muñeca del joven y lo obliga a escribir: " Conceptio Culpa, Nasci Pena, Labor Vita, Necesse Mori ", que significa " La concepción es un pecado, el nacimiento es dolor, la vida es trabajo, la muerte es una necesidad".
