The German Tango (Lady Dances with Death) (1916)

Death is a pitiless partner: when called to the dance, it claims eternal possession. This is a merciless verdict of the symbolic cartoon “German Tango” by the Dutch painter Louis Raemaekers. The painter delivered about 1,000 works on World War I and is one of the most prominent cartoonists of this war who largely contributed to the anti-German war propaganda. 

Louis Raemaekers’ The German Tango is a grim wartime illustration that captures the folly of Europe’s ruling class during World War I. A crowned woman, representing aristocratic Europe, appears entranced as she dances with a skeletal figure. Her posture suggests surrender or denial, emphasizing the pull of power and the blindness to looming catastrophe.

The skeleton, symbolizing death and German militarism, clutches his partner in an eerie waltz that speaks to Raemaekers’ biting criticism. The Nightmare (1781)

"The Nightmare" is a 1781 oil painting by Swiss artist Henry Fuseli. It shows a woman in deep sleep with her arms thrown below her, and with an apelike demonic creature crouched on her chest. The painting's dreamlike and haunting evocation of infatuation and obsession was a huge popular success. For contemporary viewers, "The Nightmare" invoked the relationship of the creature and the horse (mare) to nightmares. The work was likely inspired by the waking dreams experienced by Fuseli and his contemporaries, who found that these experiences related to folkloric beliefs like the Germanic tales about demons and witches that possessed people who slept alone.

The etymology of the word "nightmare" does not relate to horses. Rather, the word is derived from mara, a Scandinavian mythological term referring to a spirit sent to torment or suffocate sleepers. The early meaning of "nightmare" included the sleeper's experience of weight on the chest combined with sleep paralysis, dyspnea, or a feeling of dread. The painting incorporates a variety of imagery associated with these ideas, depicting a mare's head and a demon crouched atop the woman. Fuseli may have added the horse as an afterthought, since a preliminary chalk sketch did not include it. Its presence in the painting has been viewed as a visual pun on the word "nightmare" and a self-conscious reference to folklore—the horse destabilizes the painting's conceit and contributes to its Gothic tone.

The Lady of Shalott (1888)

The Lady of Shalott is a poem by Alfred Tennyson, written 50 years before Waterhouse painted this picture. The Lady of Shalott is cursed and forced to stay in a tower. She is only allowed to look at the world through a reflection in the mirror. One day, she sees a knight, Sir Lancelot, and falls in love with him. She ignores the curse and leaves the tower to find him, which results in her death. Lady of Shalott’s story can be read as a warning about female desire. Victorian society had strict rules and expectations for women that defined ‘acceptable’ behavior.

Skeletons, also known as Allegory of Death and Fame (1518)

Although for centuries scholars have attempted to understand the allegorical meaning of this print, 16th-century artist and author Giorgio Vasari described it simply as “an anatomy of desiccated bodies and of bones of the dead.” A central figure of winged Death stands over an interred skeleton, surrounded by a variety of skeletal and living human figures who appear to debate the fate of the soul. At far left is a “marasmic” man, a type of sun-dried body used by anatomists to study the muscles without removing the skin. Rosso Fiorentino, who designed the composition of this print to be engraved by Agostino Veneziano, was a Florentine contemporary of Michelangelo who planned a book on anatomy that was never published.

The Four Horsemen, from The Apocalypse (1498)

In 1498 Dürer published a book illustrating the Revelation of John or the Apocalypse of John, the last book of the New Testament. The images were unique in their large scale, breadth of concept, and unity of design. Vasily Alexandrovich Kotarbinsky was a Polish symbolist painter known for his historical and fantastical subjects. “Dark Star” is a striking and symbolic black and white ink drawing depicting a multi-winged angel, possibly a seraphim, one of the most powerful angels in Christian iconography and associated with purity, light, and closeness with God. 

Here, however, the angel is depicted in black attire, along with an intense gaze and a black star hovering above. This could suggest a complex interplay between light and darkness, purity and mystery. The rock against which she leans may represent stability or the enduring nature of the divine, while the fog or smoke at knee height adds an element of the ethereal or the transient. It speaks to the strength and enigmatic qualities of the angelic figure, perhaps hinting at the dual nature of existence, where the celestial and the earthly meet.

In "Angel in a Cemetery" The six-winged angel, which could be interpreted as a seraphim based on biblical descriptions, hovering in a cemetery beside a river, suggests a scene filled with symbolism. The seraphim are known to be the highest order of angels, often associated with light and purity.

1927 Solar Eclipse Photograph (1927)

June 1927 saw Britain in the grip of eclipse fever. A total eclipse of the sun, the first to be visible in Britain for more than 200 years, was predicted for 29 June. The path of totality ran across North Wales and Central England, from Criccieth in North Wales to Hartlepool on the east coast. 

This photograph, taken by Royal Astronomer Sir Frank Dyson of the eclipse, is an excellent example of early astronomy photography and makes a great minimalist wall art piece.
