Flight of Fancy... Off for the Sabbat (1927)
by William Mortensen (American, 1897–1965)

A figure launches into the night sky on a broomstick — but this is not an illustration. It is a photograph, made in 1927, using composite darkroom techniques that Mortensen developed himself. The result sits in an uncanny space between document and dream: too detailed to be a painting, too impossible to be a photograph.

From the late 1920s through the 1950s, William Mortensen was one of the most famous photographers in America. His subject matter — the savage, the grotesque, the occult, the theatrical — made him a permanent enemy of the puritanical new guard in photography led by Ansel Adams, who reportedly called him "The Antichrist" and worked actively to erase him from photographic history. It largely worked: Mortensen spent decades out of print and out of the canon.

He is back. This image is proof of why he deserved to be.

The Destruction of Leviathan (1866)
Engraving by Gustave Doré (French, 1832–1883)

Gustave Doré was the most celebrated illustrator of the 19th century — his engravings for the Bible, Dante's Inferno, Milton's Paradise Lost, and Cervantes' Don Quixote defined how generations of readers visualized those texts. His work is characterized by monumental scale, dramatic chiaroscuro, and a sense of cosmic weight that few illustrators before or since have matched.

This plate depicts the moment from Isaiah 27:1, when God strikes down Leviathan at the end of days: "In that day the Lord with his hard and great and strong sword will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, Leviathan the twisting serpent, and he will slay the dragon that is in the sea." Doré renders the beast as a vast coiling sea serpent, its body arching against a sky split by divine light — a creature so immense it seems to fill the world it is being torn from.

The serpent's form draws on multiple mythological traditions: the Midgard Serpent of Norse cosmology, and the dragon Vritra slain by Indra in the Rig Veda. Doré understood that the oldest monsters share a shape.

A woman launches herself into a dark sky on a broomstick, her body arched against the night, her expression unreadable — neither fearful nor triumphant, simply departing. The world below dissolves into Pénot's characteristic mist: shadow and suggestion, nothing solid enough to hold her.

Albert Joseph Pénot was a French painter whose work centered almost entirely on the female form. While his contemporaries filled their canvases with elaborate narrative scenes, Pénot stripped his compositions down to the figure itself — the surrounding world rendered in atmospheric haze, giving his subjects an uncanny isolation. His darker paintings, of which Départ pour le Sabbat is the most iconic, place women in the role of the sorceress: autonomous, airborne, and entirely beyond reach.

The Sabbath she departs for is her own.

by William-Adolphe Bouguereau (French, 1825–1905)

Bouguereau was one of the foremost French Academic painters of the 19th century — celebrated for his technical mastery and controversial for his unflinching subject matter. This painting draws from Dante Alighieri's Inferno, the first canticle of The Divine Comedy, in which Dante is guided through the circles of Hell by the Roman poet Virgil.

The scene is set in the eighth circle, reserved for the sin of Fraud. Dante and Virgil look on as two damned souls tear at each other in savage combat: Capocchio, an alchemist and heretic burned at the stake in Siena in 1293, and Gianni Schicchi, who infamously impersonated the recently deceased Buoso Donati to fraudulently rewrite his will. Their punishment is eternal — and Bouguereau renders it with the full force of Academic realism: muscles, tendons, and sinew rendered with a precision that makes the violence feel immediate and inescapable.

A painting that rewards the viewer who knows the story — and unsettles the one who doesn't.

Louis Chalon was a French Symbolist painter and illustrator whose work drew heavily from mythology, allegory, and the decorative arts. His Circe is one of his most arresting images: the enchantress stands framed by a radiant sun — a deliberate allusion to her divine parentage as the daughter of Helios, god of the sun — her expression poised between invitation and threat.

In Greek mythology, Circe is a goddess of magic who dwells on the island of Aeaea. She is most famous from Homer's Odyssey, where she transforms Odysseus's crew into pigs with a potion — only to be outwitted by Odysseus himself, who forces her to restore them. She is one of antiquity's most complex figures: sorceress, host, lover, and obstacle, all at once.

Chalon's painting captures her at the moment before the transformation — still, sovereign, and entirely in control.

Ernst Haeckel was a zoologist, naturalist, and one of the most visually gifted scientists of the 19th century. Over his career he described and named thousands of new species — and coined terms still used in biology today, including "ecology," "phylum," and "stem cell." His landmark publication Kunstformen der Natur ("Art Forms in Nature"), a series of 100 lithographic plates published between 1899 and 1904, would go on to directly inspire the Art Nouveau movement.

Plate 67, Chiroptera, is devoted entirely to bats — specifically the extraordinary diversity of their facial structures. The Castle Rising Sisters [Date Unknown]

This photograph is commonly titled "Welsh Witches' Tea Party" — but the subjects are not witches, and they are not Welsh. They are residents of Trinity Hospital in Castle Rising, Norfolk: an almshouse charity founded circa 1600 for unmarried or widowed women over 56 years of age.

The original admission criteria read: "They must be of honest life and conversation, religious, grave and discreet, able to read, if such a one be had, a single woman, her place to be void on marriage, to be of 56 years at least, no common beggar, harlot, scold, drunkard, regular of taverns, inns and alehouses."

Today the criteria are considerably more relaxed — single women from the parishes of Castle Rising, North Wootton, and Roydon in reduced financial circumstances. The dress code is gone too, yet residents still take great pride in wearing the historic "uniform" provided by Henry Howard, Earl of Northampton, on special occasions like Founder's Day.

A photograph misread as witchcraft, hiding a far stranger and more enduring story.

"Die Nibelungen: Kriemhild's Revenge" is a silent film directed by Fritz Lang, released in 1924. It is the second part of Lang's two-part series, the first being "Die Nibelungen: Siegfried." It is considered one of the greatest artistic and technical achievements of the German silent cinema era. Lang's adaptation of the epic poem "The Song of the Nibelungs" was a monumental task that showcased the capabilities of early cinema.

In the film "Die Nibelungen: Kriemhild's Revenge," Kriemhild's character is portrayed by Margarete Schön as a figure of remorseless and implacable determination, seeking revenge for the murder of her husband, Siegfried. Her costume design plays a significant role in conveying this transformation from a grieving widow to a vengeful queen.

The costume obscures much of her, leaving her face, and particularly her eyes, to express the depth of Kriemhild's emotions. This design choice emphasizes her intense gaze, which conveys her inner turmoil and unyielding resolve. The costume likely includes elements that are both regal and somber, reflecting her royal status and her dark purpose.

The nymphs, embodying both innocence and mischief, attempt to pull the reluctant satyr into the water. This scene is based on Greek mythology and captures a moment of playful yet seductive interaction between the creatures of the forest and the mythical satyr.

The composition is classical, with Bouguereau’s use of interconnected poses and careful sketches contributing to the painting’s rhythmic and realistic effect. The painting was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1873 and was accompanied by a verse from the Roman poet Publius Statius, which emphasizes the satyr’s hesitation to enter the water due to his inability to swim.
