John William Waterhouse was one of the last great painters of the Pre-Raphaelite tradition — working decades after the movement's peak, he continued to paint women from classical mythology with a lushness and psychological intensity that set him apart from his contemporaries. Hylas and the Nymphs is among his most celebrated works, and one of the most reproduced paintings of the Victorian era.

The painting depicts a moment from Greek mythology: Hylas, the young companion of Heracles, has gone ashore to fetch water during the Argonauts' voyage. Seven Naiads — water nymphs — emerge from a lily-covered pond, their alabaster skin luminous against the dark water, flowers woven into their auburn hair. They are beautiful and they are dangerous. Hylas reaches toward them, already lost.

Waterhouse frames the scene from a slightly elevated angle, placing the viewer above the action — a witness to the abduction rather than a participant in it. The nymphs' expressions are not cruel. That is what makes the painting so unsettling.

Physicians debated whether trance states could cure hysteria. Spiritualist societies held séances in parlors across America and Britain. Books like this one — practical guides promising to teach the reader the secrets of mind control and thought transference — sold in enormous numbers. The owl on the cover, ancient symbol of hidden knowledge and nocturnal sight, was a natural choice for a subject that promised to reveal what ordinary consciousness could not see.

The book is long out of print. The owl is still watching.

Johannes Leonardus Kleintjes is known for his genre, history, and landscape paintings. He married painter Hedwig Cecile Albertine van Osselin and he and his wife often exhibited their works together. After her death, Kleintjes painted still lifes of flowers as a tribute to her.

"In Naam der Menschheid" (In the Name of Humanity) is a painting that was created in Brussels in February 1914, as noted by the artist on the back of the canvas. This work can be seen as a protest against the rising popularity of militarism and radical nationalism at the time. The tensions between countries in Europe, which this painting addresses, would lead to the outbreak of World War I later that summer.

The painting's title itself, "In the Name of Humanity," suggests a plea for compassion and reason in the face of growing militaristic fervor. Kaloma became one of the most widely reproduced photographs in American popular culture. For decades it circulated with the claim that the subject was Josie Earp — wife of Wyatt Earp, the legendary lawman of the American West. The attribution was almost certainly false, but it gave the image a mythology that outlasted the truth. In the 1960s, Kaloma was rediscovered by the counterculture: the image appeared in underground publications, concert posters, and the visual language of the psychedelic era, where its sepia nostalgia read as both risqué and romantic.

The subject's name was never recorded. The photograph has outlasted everyone who knew it.

Lilith (1889)

The apparent sweetness of this work by John Collier, a Pre-Raphaelite painter, is a wonderful testimony of the two sides of Lilith's figure. Juggling between the images of beauty and that of a cold murderess, Collier is one of the artists that has transformed her image. From the Assyrio-Babylonian goddess, later known as the first woman in Jewish mythology, Lilith slowly turns into a powerful icon.

The contrasting colors of the painting, and its warm palette, further enhance the atmosphere that emerges from the work. This use of the colors, in Lilith as well as in Collier's other portraits, earned him a certain recognition from his contemporaries. Seen as solemn, his work, however, offers an obvious mastery of tones and light.

Eventually, the figure of Lilith evolves gradually from the dangerous demoness depicted by the religious writings to a symbol of feminism. By her aspect of being equal to Adam, from whom she does not depend, the succubus becomes a feminist icon, a perfect opposition to Eve's figure. Many powerful, sometimes feared, historical and mythological female figures are associated with snakes. These include Cleopatra and Medusa, whose association with snakes makes them desired or monstrous.

Lilith's origins stretch back to Assyrian and Babylonian mythology, where she appears as a storm demon. In Jewish tradition she became the first woman — created from the same earth as Adam, not from his rib — who refused to be subordinate and left the Garden of her own will. Religious texts cast her as a demoness and child-killer. Later centuries recast her as something else: a symbol of autonomy, of refusal, of the power that patriarchal systems most fear in women.

Collier's painting holds both readings at once. She is beautiful and she is dangerous, and the serpent around her shoulders is not a threat — it is a companion.
