The sky is on fire. Thousands of streaks of light pour downward from a single point above the horizon, so dense they overlap, so bright they illuminate the figures watching from below — some kneeling, some fleeing, some simply standing with their faces turned upward in awe or terror.

On the night of November 12–13, 1833, the Leonid meteor shower produced one of the most spectacular celestial events in recorded history. Estimates suggest that up to 100,000 meteors per hour fell across North America — so many that witnesses described the sky as raining fire, the stars falling like snowflakes. Many people who saw it believed the world was ending. Churches filled before dawn. The event was reported across the continent and became one of the most widely documented astronomical phenomena of the 19th century.

It also launched the scientific study of meteor showers. Astronomers who investigated the 1833 storm were the first to establish that meteors originate from specific points in the sky — what we now call radiant points — and that they recur on predictable schedules tied to cometary debris.

Adolf Vollmy's engraving was published in 1889 in a religious almanac, where it illustrated a passage about signs in the heavens. The image captures both the scientific reality and the human experience of that night: the sky transformed into something impossible, and the small figures below trying to make sense of it.

A large-format diagram of the honeybee colony in full: the queen, the workers, the drones, the hexagonal geometry of the comb, the stages of larval development rendered in careful cross-section. Labels in French. Borders in the warm ochre and deep green of the period. The kind of image that was designed to be looked at for a long time.

The French planche — the educational wall chart — was one of the great visual achievements of 19th-century science communication. Produced for schools, natural history museums, and scientific societies, these posters combined rigorous biological accuracy with a compositional elegance that has made them enduringly collectible. The best of them treat their subjects — insects, plants, anatomical systems, geological strata — with the same seriousness and visual care that painters brought to portraiture.

La Vie De L'Abeille is a particularly fine example: the honeybee colony as a complete world, rendered in the precise, unhurried style of 19th-century natural history illustration. It works as science. It works as decoration. And it rewards the kind of slow looking that most wall art doesn't ask for.

The Respite [Le Répit] (1893–1895)

Death is seated, skeletal and enormous, cradling a bat at its chest. The bat feeds. Death allows it. This is the respite — a pause in the killing, a moment of something that looks almost like tenderness, offered to a creature that lives in darkness and eats what it can find.

Valère Bernard was a Provençal painter, poet, and printmaker who worked at the intersection of Symbolism and political art. He is little known outside of France, which is a significant oversight: his engraving series Guerro (1893–1895) — the title is Provençal for "war" — is one of the most unsparing anti-war works of the 19th century, produced in the shadow of the Franco-Prussian War and in anticipation of worse to come.

The series is explicitly in the tradition of Francisco Goya's Disasters of War (1810–1820) — Goya's eighty-two etchings documenting the atrocities of the Napoleonic invasion of Spain with a directness that was too disturbing to publish in his lifetime. Bernard inherited Goya's conviction that art could bear witness to what official history preferred to obscure, and his Guerro plates share that same quality of unflinching attention.

Le Répit is the series at its most allegorical: not the battlefield itself, but what war produces and sustains — the creatures that thrive in its aftermath, the brief silences between one catastrophe and the next. The title is ironic. This is not rest. It is only the pause before it starts again.

A woman in dark robes stares directly into the camera. Her face is still. Her eyes are not.

Die Nibelungen: Kriemhild's Rache (1924) is the second part of Fritz Lang's monumental two-film adaptation of the medieval German epic Das Nibelungenlied. Lang — who would go on to direct Metropolis and M — brought the full resources of Weimar-era German cinema to the project: vast sets, thousands of extras, and a visual language drawn from German Expressionism that turned myth into architecture.

Kriemhild, played by Margarete Schön, begins the story as a grieving widow. By the film's end she has become something else entirely — a force of pure, patient vengeance who will burn a hall full of men to the ground rather than let her husband's murder go unanswered. Her costume design is deliberate: dark, enveloping, obscuring everything except her face. The eyes do the work.

Kaloma (1914)

A sepia-toned photograph of a woman, posed in the soft-focus style of early 20th century pictorialist photography — the kind of image that circulated as a novelty postcard, passed between hands, tucked into wallets and pinned to walls in an era before the word "pin-up" existed.

Kaloma became one of the most widely reproduced photographs in American popular culture. For decades it circulated with the claim that the subject was Josie Earp — wife of Wyatt Earp, the legendary lawman of the American West. The attribution was almost certainly false, but it gave the image a mythology that outlasted the truth. In the 1960s, Kaloma was rediscovered by the counterculture: the image appeared in underground publications, concert posters, and the visual language of the psychedelic era, where its sepia nostalgia read as both risqué and romantic.

The subject's name was never recorded. The photograph has outlasted everyone who knew it.

Hypnotism Owl (1903)

An owl stares directly out from the cover of a 1903 Chicago guidebook on hypnotism, mesmerism, and spiritualism. Its gaze is fixed and unblinking — which, for a book about the power of the directed mind, is exactly right.

The late Victorian and Edwardian eras were gripped by a genuine fascination with hypnotism and mesmerism. Stage hypnotists filled theaters. Physicians debated whether trance states could cure hysteria. Spiritualist societies held séances in parlors across America and Britain. Books like this one — practical guides promising to teach the reader the secrets of mind control and thought transference — sold in enormous numbers. The owl on the cover, ancient symbol of hidden knowledge and nocturnal sight, was a natural choice for a subject that promised to reveal what ordinary consciousness could not see.

The book is long out of print. The owl is still watching.

Hypnosis (1904)

A massive, shadowed figure looms over a smaller prone form below — the dominant presence radiating an almost physical force, the figure beneath utterly still. The composition is stark and psychological, more concerned with power and surrender than with narrative.

Sascha Schneider was a German Symbolist painter and sculptor whose work centered on the idealized male nude as a vehicle for exploring themes of dominance, submission, will, and transcendence. He worked during the turn of the 20th century, a period of intense cultural ferment in Germany, and his imagery — monumental, charged, and deliberately ambiguous — attracted both admiration and controversy. He is perhaps best known today as the cover artist for Karl May's enormously popular adventure novels, though his fine art work stands entirely on its own terms.

Hypnosis is one of his most direct explorations of psychological control: the hypnotist as force of nature, the subject as willing vessel. Whether this reads as threat or release depends entirely on the viewer.

Hylas and the Nymphs (1896)

John William Waterhouse was one of the last great painters of the Pre-Raphaelite tradition — working decades after the movement's peak, he continued to paint women from classical mythology with a lushness and psychological intensity that set him apart from his contemporaries. Hylas and the Nymphs is among his most celebrated works, and one of the most reproduced paintings of the Victorian era.

The painting depicts a moment from Greek mythology: Hylas, the young companion of Heracles, has gone ashore to fetch water during the Argonauts' voyage. Seven Naiads — water nymphs — emerge from a lily-covered pond, their alabaster skin luminous against the dark water, flowers woven into their auburn hair. They are beautiful and they are dangerous. Hylas reaches toward them, already lost.

Waterhouse frames the scene from a slightly elevated angle, placing the viewer above the action — a witness to the abduction rather than a participant in it. The nymphs' expressions are not cruel. That is what makes the painting so unsettling.

Geraint and Enid Ride Away (1868)

This engraving illustrates Alfred Lord Tennyson's Idylls of the King (1859), the Victorian epic retelling of Arthurian legend. The specific lines it depicts come from the idyll "Geraint and Enid":

And kissed her climbing, and she cast her arms
About him, and at once they rode away.

Doré illustrated Tennyson's Idylls in 1868, producing some of the most celebrated images of Arthurian legend ever made. His engravings defined how the Victorian imagination pictured Camelot — and for many readers, still do.

Frog (1814)

A single frog, rendered in spare black ink, sits beneath a column of red calligraphy. Its expression is melancholy — or perhaps simply patient. In Zen painting, the two are often the same thing.

This woodblock print comes from Meika Gafu (1814), a collection of prints by celebrated artists of the Japanese Edo period. Frogs and toads were favored subjects in Zenga — Zen-influenced ink painting — because Zen monks saw in them a kind of philosophical ideal: creatures entirely unbothered by the noise and ambition of the human world, sitting still in the present moment without effort or pretense. Hoji's frog looks like it has been sitting there for centuries and intends to sit for several more.

The Destruction of Leviathan (1866)

Gustave Doré was the most celebrated illustrator of the 19th century — his engravings for the Bible, Dante's Inferno, Milton's Paradise Lost, and Cervantes' Don Quixote defined how generations of readers visualized those texts. His work is characterized by monumental scale, dramatic chiaroscuro, and a sense of cosmic weight that few illustrators before or since have matched.

This plate depicts the moment from Isaiah 27:1, when God strikes down Leviathan at the end of days: "In that day the Lord with his hard and great and strong sword will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, Leviathan the twisting serpent, and he will slay the dragon that is in the sea." Doré renders the beast as a vast coiling sea serpent, its body arching against a sky split by divine light — a creature so immense it seems to fill the world it is being torn from.

The serpent's form draws on multiple mythological traditions: the Midgard Serpent of Norse cosmology, and the dragon Vritra slain by Indra in the Rig Veda. Doré understood that the oldest monsters share a shape.

Dante and Virgil in Hell (1850)

Bouguereau was one of the foremost French Academic painters of the 19th century — celebrated for his technical mastery and controversial for his unflinching subject matter. This painting draws from Dante Alighieri's Inferno, the first canticle of The Divine Comedy, in which Dante is guided through the circles of Hell by the Roman poet Virgil.

The scene is set in the eighth circle, reserved for the sin of Fraud. Dante and Virgil look on as two damned souls tear at each other in savage combat: Capocchio, an alchemist and heretic burned at the stake in Siena in 1293, and Gianni Schicchi, who infamously impersonated the recently deceased Buoso Donati to fraudulently rewrite his will. Their punishment is eternal — and Bouguereau renders it with the full force of Academic realism: muscles, tendons, and sinew rendered with a precision that makes the violence feel immediate and inescapable.

A painting that rewards the viewer who knows the story — and unsettles the one who doesn't.

Circe (1888)

Louis Chalon was a French Symbolist painter and illustrator whose work drew heavily from mythology, allegory, and the decorative arts. His Circe is one of his most arresting images: the enchantress stands framed by a radiant sun — a deliberate allusion to her divine parentage as the daughter of Helios, god of the sun — her expression poised between invitation and threat.

In Greek mythology, Circe is a goddess of magic who dwells on the island of Aeaea. She is most famous from Homer's Odyssey, where she transforms Odysseus's crew into pigs with a potion — only to be outwitted by Odysseus himself, who forces her to restore them. She is one of antiquity's most complex figures: sorceress, host, lover, and obstacle, all at once.

Chiroptera [Bats] (1904)

Ernst Haeckel was a zoologist, naturalist, and one of the most visually gifted scientists of the 19th century. Over his career he described and named thousands of new species — and coined terms still used in biology today, including "ecology," "phylum," and "stem cell." His landmark publication Kunstformen der Natur ("Art Forms in Nature"), a series of 100 lithographic plates published between 1899 and 1904, would go on to directly inspire the Art Nouveau movement.

Plate 67, Chiroptera, is devoted entirely to bats — specifically the extraordinary diversity of their facial structures. The Castle Rising Sisters [Date Unknown]

This photograph is commonly titled "Welsh Witches' Tea Party" — but the subjects are not witches, and they are not Welsh. They are residents of Trinity Hospital in Castle Rising, Norfolk: an almshouse charity founded circa 1600 for unmarried or widowed women over 56 years of age.

The original admission criteria read: "They must be of honest life and conversation, religious, grave and discreet, able to read, if such a one be had, a single woman, her place to be void on marriage, to be of 56 years at least, no common beggar, harlot, scold, drunkard, regular of taverns, inns and alehouses."

Today the criteria are considerably more relaxed — single women from the parishes of Castle Rising, North Wootton, and Roydon in reduced financial circumstances. The dress code is gone too, yet residents still take great pride in wearing the historic "uniform" provided by Henry Howard, Earl of Northampton, on special occasions like Founder's Day.

A photograph misread as witchcraft, hiding a far stranger and more enduring story.

Boreas (1903)

In Greek mythology, Boreas is the god of the north wind — cold, powerful, and untameable. Waterhouse renders his presence not as a figure but as a force: a young woman caught mid-step, her slate and blue draperies whipping around her as an invisible hand pulls her forward. Pink blossoms and yellow daffodils frame the scene, spring's softness set against something wilder and older.

It's a painting about surrender and resilience in equal measure — the girl's stance poised yet dynamic, neither fleeing nor fully yielding. Waterhouse's signature Pre-Raphaelite lyricism is here at its most atmospheric.

Chauve-Souris D'Egypte [Bats of Egypt] (1809)

When Napoleon invaded Ottoman Egypt in 1798, he brought an unusual contingent alongside his army: over 150 scientists, artists, and scholars tasked with documenting everything they encountered. This print is the first plate from the Histoire Naturelle volumes of the Description de l'Égypte — the monumental publication that resulted from that expedition.

Three species are depicted with the precision of scientific illustration: the Bare-Bellied Tomb Bat, the Hollow-Faced Bat, and the Common Pipistrelle Bat. Creatures of the night, rendered with the cool exactitude of Enlightenment science — and a natural fit for walls that appreciate the darker side of the natural world.

Skeletons, also known as Allegory of Death and Fame (1518)

For centuries, scholars have debated the allegorical meaning of this print. Giorgio Vasari, 16th-century artist and author, described it simply as "an anatomy of desiccated bodies and of bones of the dead." A central figure of winged Death stands over an interred skeleton, surrounded by skeletal and living human figures who appear to debate the fate of the soul.

At far left stands a "marasmic" man — a sun-dried body used by anatomists to study musculature without removing the skin. Rosso Fiorentino, a Florentine contemporary of Michelangelo who designed this composition, had planned a book on anatomy that was never published. This print is all that remains of that ambition.

A meditation on mortality that holds its own on any wall — unsettling, erudite, and impossible to ignore.

The Witch (Night Piece) (1626)

A nocturnal scene of dark enchantment: a sorceress stands within a magic circle etched into the ground — a supernaturally consecrated space — as she overturns a horn into a cauldron engulfed in billowing flames. Two streams of ash spew from pipes held by a somersaulting demon at her left. Around her, grotesque creatures make knowing and silly faces at the viewer, threading whimsy and farce through an ostensibly serious occult subject.

Van de Velde's swirling, decorative composition is a masterwork of Dutch Golden Age printmaking — equally at home in a witch's study or a darkly curated living room.
