El consenso general de los académicos es que la pintura representa una crítica racionalista de la superstición y la ignorancia, particularmente en cuestiones religiosas: las corozas de las brujas no sólo son emblemáticas de la violencia de la Inquisición española (las llamas hacia arriba indican que han sido condenadas como herejes impenitentes y serán quemados en la hoguera), pero también recuerdan a las mitras episcopales, con las características dobles puntas. La cabra posee grandes cuernos y está coronada por una corona de hojas de roble. A la derecha, se puede ver a una vieja bruja sosteniendo en sus manos a un bebé que parece extremadamente hambriento, pero aparentemente todavía vivo, mientras que una bruja más joven a su derecha hace lo mismo con un niño que parece más saludable, lo que implica que seguirán el mismo destino.
