The Respite [Le Répit] (1893–1895)

Death is seated, skeletal and enormous, cradling a bat at its chest. The bat feeds. Death allows it. This is the respite — a pause in the killing, a moment of something that looks almost like tenderness, offered to a creature that lives in darkness and eats what it can find.

Valère Bernard was a Provençal painter, poet, and printmaker who worked at the intersection of Symbolism and political art. He is little known outside of France, which is a significant oversight: his engraving series Guerro (1893–1895) — the title is Provençal for "war" — is one of the most unsparing anti-war works of the 19th century, produced in the shadow of the Franco-Prussian War and in anticipation of worse to come.

The series is explicitly in the tradition of Francisco Goya's Disasters of War (1810–1820) — Goya's eighty-two etchings documenting the atrocities of the Napoleonic invasion of Spain with a directness that was too disturbing to publish in his lifetime. Bernard inherited Goya's conviction that art could bear witness to what official history preferred to obscure, and his Guerro plates share that same quality of unflinching attention.

Le Répit is the series at its most allegorical: not the battlefield itself, but what war produces and sustains — the creatures that thrive in its aftermath, the brief silences between one catastrophe and the next. The title is ironic. This is not rest. It is only the pause before it starts again.
