Dante and Virgil in Hell (1850)

Bouguereau was one of the foremost French Academic painters of the 19th century — celebrated for his technical mastery and controversial for his unflinching subject matter. This painting draws from Dante Alighieri's Inferno, the first canticle of The Divine Comedy, in which Dante is guided through the circles of Hell by the Roman poet Virgil.
The scene is set in the eighth circle, reserved for the sin of Fraud. Dante and Virgil look on as two damned souls tear at each other in savage combat: Capocchio, an alchemist and heretic burned at the stake in Siena in 1293, and Gianni Schicchi, who infamously impersonated the recently deceased Buoso Donati to fraudulently rewrite his will. Their punishment is eternal — and Bouguereau renders it with the full force of Academic realism: muscles, tendons, and sinew rendered with a precision that makes the violence feel immediate and inescapable.
A painting that rewards the viewer who knows the story — and unsettles the one who doesn't.
