This painting depicts four human skulls stacked in a pyramidal formation, a subject matter that increasingly preoccupied Cézanne in later life. Working in isolation in the last decade of his life, Cézanne frequently alluded to mortality in his letters: "For me, life has begun to be deathly monotonous"; "As for me, I'm old. I won't have time to express myself"; and "I might as well be dead."

Cézanne's preoccupation with death was an ongoing theme that can be identified in a number of still life skull paintings that he produced between 1898 and 1905. These paintings, produced in both oils and watercolor, offer a more subtle representation of the traditional theme of vanitas.

This Japanese Samurai may have been one of the last ever photographed, as the samurai social class was abolished two years later in 1868 as a result of the Meiji Restoration, marking the end of the Edo period in Japan.

Satan in the Frozen Lake (1870)

Jean-Édouard Dargent, known as Yan’ Dargent and in his later years Yann Dargent, was a French painter and illustrator known for works characterized by detailed and dramatic visual storytelling. His illustrations and paintings have been appreciated for their historical and mythical representations.

In Dante Alighieri’s “Inferno,” (from the "Divine Comedy") the significance of Satan being trapped in the frozen lake, known as Lake Cocytus, lies in the symbolic representation of his punishment. This lake forms the ninth and lowest circle of Hell, where the worst sinners, those who committed treachery against God, are punished. The lake is said to be frozen due to the tears of Lucifer and the flapping of his wings, which keeps it perpetually icy.

Satan himself is depicted as a giant demon, immobilized up to his waist in the ice, signifying his complete impotence and isolation in the depths of Hell. He has three faces and bat-like wings, and his presence in the frozen lake serves as a stark contrast to the fiery perception of Hell that is commonly held.

He produced a prolific number of prints, many of which were exported to the United States, contributing to his international acclaim.

“Scops Owl in Flight, Cherry Blossoms and Full Moon,” created in 1926, is a quintessential example of Koson’s mastery in capturing the beauty of nature. The woodblock print features a scops owl in mid-flight against a backdrop of cherry blossoms and a full moon, encapsulating the transient beauty of spring and the serene elegance of the nocturnal bird.
