Johannes Leonardus Kleintjes is known for his genre, history, and landscape paintings. He married painter Hedwig Cecile Albertine van Osselin and he and his wife often exhibited their works together. After her death, Kleintjes painted still lifes of flowers as a tribute to her.

"In Naam der Menschheid" (In the Name of Humanity) is a painting that was created in Brussels in February 1914, as noted by the artist on the back of the canvas. This work can be seen as a protest against the rising popularity of militarism and radical nationalism at the time. The tensions between countries in Europe, which this painting addresses, would lead to the outbreak of World War I later that summer.

The painting's title itself, "In the Name of Humanity," suggests a plea for compassion and reason in the face of growing militaristic fervor. Given the historical context and the symbolic nature of Kleintjes' work, the painting likely serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of war and the importance of maintaining our shared humanity amidst political turmoil.
