Polish (1854-1929)

Jacek Malczewski is one of the most important Polish symbolist painters. Malczewski is associated with the Young Poland movement (Młoda Polska), a modernist period in Polish culture following more than a century of Partitions of Poland. Therefore Polish martyrdom, romantic ideas of independence, local folklore, and death were recurrent motifs in Malczewski’s oeuvre.

This hopeful message certainly bears some religious undertones. Look at this old man: he seems to be ready to die, his head turned towards death and his neck tense. His hands clutched in prayer, his fingers fiddling with a small medallion with Virgin Mary, something that many Polish Catholics wear even today.

Death looks almost like a Greek goddess. However, it’s difficult to understand her facial expression: is she feeling pity for this old man? Or is she just focused on doing her job?

Albert Joseph Pénot (28 February 1862 – 16 October 1930) was a French painter known for female forms and landscapes. Today, he is more popularly and specifically recognized for a subset of paintings centering on women of darker, more macabre themes.

Pénot was concerned first and foremost with anatomically accurate portrayals of women. Singular female forms were the implicit focus of his work, whereas the worlds surrounding his characters are seldom realized beyond misty atmospheres and patches of shadow and light. Environments are incidental and are typically shrouded in haze, giving the figures themselves explicit priority.

Der Hass [Hatred] (1896)

Pietro Pajetta) was an Italian painter known for his genre art, which often depicted rustic and everyday scenes with a focus on the human condition. His works are characterized by an exuberance of feeling and a keen observation of life’s various facets.

“Der Hass” (Hatred), painted in 1896, is one of Pajetta’s more evocative works. It takes inspiration from Lorenzo Stecchetti’s “Canto dell’Odio” (Song of Hate), a poem that narrates the story of a rejected suitor who seeks revenge on the corpse of his beloved. The painting is a dark and powerful representation of hatred and vengeance, capturing the intensity of the suitor’s emotions as he enacts his revenge.

The artwork is notable for its dramatic composition and the raw emotion it conveys. Pajetta’s use of dark, muted colors and stark contrasts creates a haunting atmosphere that reflects the theme of the poem. The painting’s subject matter and its execution make it a compelling study of the darker aspects of human emotions and the lengths to which they can drive a person.

Pajetta’s life was marked by his service in the Italian army during the War of Italian Independence and his subsequent struggles with economic instability. Despite these challenges, he managed to create art that resonated with the public and earned him recognition at various exhibitions. “Der Hass” stands as a testament to his artistic talent and his ability to translate complex emotions into compelling visual narratives.

The Destruction of Leviathan (1866)

Destruction of Leviathan is based on the Biblical story of Leviathan referenced in the book of Job. Leviathan is described as a giant fire-breathing serpent so terrifying that just the sight of it would drive men insane. The Book of Isaiah later says that on Judgement day, God will slay the serpent. 

The serpent's face likely modeled on depictions of the great Midgard Serpent in Norse tales, and the battle scene itself was based on the Rig Veda, where Indra kills Vritra (the first born of dragons), with a thunderbolt. 

The Destruction of Leviathan represents the abolishment of darkness and insanity. In this work, Gustave uses his depiction of the creature to show the resemblances to terrible creatures described in other various religions to showcase his personal unification philosophy.

Flight of Fancy... Off for the Sabbot (1927)
by William Mortensen (United States, 1897-1965)

In a roll call of the pioneers of modern photography, one name is never invoked. From the late 1920s to the 1950s, William Mortensen was one of the most famous and celebrated photographers in America. However, his subject matter – which veered towards the savage, indecorous, gothic and grotesque – as well as his use of montage and illustration, made him a pariah among the puritanical new guard in photography, led by Ansel Adams, who tried to write him out of history, and even called him "The Antichrist". 

Mortensen’s methods often made it hard to distinguish whether the results were photographs or not. He used traditional printmaking techniques, such as bromoiling, and developed many of his own. He would create composite images, scratch, scrape and draw on his prints, then apply a texture that made them look like etchings, thereby disguising his manipulations. Consequently, every print was unique. Ultimately, Mortensen’s aim was to create something that, for all intents and purposes, appeared to be a photograph, yet portrayed scenes so fantastic they caused wonder and astonishment in the viewer.

Frog (1814)

This simple yet amusing print by the Japanese artist Hoji is a woodblock print from "Meika Gafu" 1814, and shows the sad-faced frog in black ink beneath red calligraphy. Toads and frogs were common motifs in "Zenga" or "Zen pictures" during the Japanese Edo period, as Zen monks considered them to be creatures free from the distraction of the mundane world and representing a pure and natural life.
